Wu’s Winning Ways Return in Shanghai
Local hero Ashun Wu triumphs again at Volvo China Open nearly a decade after maiden victory
Seoul, Korea - In a captivating finish that thrilled the home crowd, Ashun Wu brilliantly erased a four-shot deficit on Sunday to clinch his second Volvo China Open title at Enhance Anting Golf Club in Shanghai.
The 39-year-old Chinese star, remarkably winning the tournament almost exactly ten years after his first triumph, carded an impressive final-round 65 to edge the field by a single stroke. This victory marks Wu’s fifth DP World Tour title, coming nine years and 359 days since he first tasted success at this event.
Beginning the day four shots adrift, Wu remained steady on the front nine, reaching the turn at one-under-par. But as the back nine unfolded, Wu ignited his charge. Back-to-back birdies on the tenth and eleventh holes narrowed the gap, and with three more birdies down the stretch, Wu set the clubhouse lead at 14 under par.
Spaniard Eugenio Chacarra, looking for consecutive DP World Tour victories after last month's Hero Indian Open success, faltered under pressure, opening the door for Wu. England's Jordan Smith, Wu's playing partner, closed with a 67 to finish one back at 13-under.
Late drama unfolded when China's Haotong Li eagled the 17th to give himself a chance at the par-five 18th. However, a wayward approach found trouble beside a greenside stream, sealing Wu’s victory in dramatic fashion.
"It's very special," an emotional Wu said afterwards. "Winning here again in Shanghai, nearly exactly ten years after my first, is an incredible story. This is very exciting—especially winning my country’s open."
This win not only secures Wu's DP World Tour status until the end of 2027 but also headlines a historic week for Chinese golf, with three other Chinese players finishing inside the top ten.
"It was a really good game today," Wu reflected, "Shanghai is my home. Playing here gave me strength and luck."
