Wiesberger Welcomes the Roar: Austrian Star Returns Home to Gut Altentann
Eight-time DP World Tour winner eyes a fairytale week at the Austrian Alpine Open in Salzburg
Bernd Wiesberger is relishing the chance to compete in front of a home crowd once more as he prepares for a long-awaited return to Austrian soil at this week’s Austrian Alpine Open presented by SalzburgerLand.
The eight-time DP World Tour winner headlines a strong field at Golf Club Gut Altentann, a Jack Nicklaus-designed layout steeped in European Tour history and hosting its first national open in over a decade. It marks Wiesberger’s first home appearance since 2017 and his first at this course since his early playing days.
“It’s nice to have a home event out here,” said Wiesberger. “I’ve really been looking forward to it since it was announced. I feel ready to go. I feel like I’m playing decently going into the week. I enjoy the golf course, so I hope it will be a good week.”
The 39-year-old famously triumphed at his national open in 2012, in a week tinged with emotion following the loss of his grandfather. “It was a very emotional week. Your home open always brings the best out of you,” he added.
Wiesberger will be joined by Austrian talents Lukas Nemecz and Max Steinlechner, both chasing DP World Tour cards via the Road to Mallorca, while former World No.1 Luke Donald, fresh off his bogey-free round at Quail Hollow, adds international gravitas.
In-form Jordan Smith and Soudal Open champion Kristoffer Reitan round out a compelling field aiming to conquer the $2.75 million prize fund and scenic Salzburg test.
Wiesberger’s return has already ignited local anticipation—and the galleries at Gut Altentann will be louder than ever.
