Thompson Returns to Defend in Deere Showdown
Young stars, past champions and playoff chasers set for a high-stakes summer swing in Silvis
Las Vegas - Defending Champion Davis Thompson returns to TPC Deere Run this week to defend his 2024 title at the John Deere Classic, with FedExCup pressure and future stars in the spotlight.
The 25-year-old American broke the tournament’s 72-hole scoring record last year, winning by four shots and becoming the 24th player to claim his maiden PGA TOUR title in Silvis. Now ranked 70th in the standings, Thompson is fighting to secure a playoff berth with only five events remaining.
“This is a special place for me,” Thompson said. “Coming back, it’s more than defending a title—it’s about pushing for something bigger with my game.” He’s joined by fellow past winners like Zach Johnson and Lucas Glover.
Rising amateur Jackson Koivun, fresh off sweeping every major college golf award, will make his John Deere debut on a sponsor’s exemption. Max Homa, Rickie Fowler and Luke Clanton add name value and storylines as they battle form and rankings.
With three top-ranked amateurs, nine first-time winners this season, and John Deere’s sponsorship renewed through 2030, the event is more than a warm-up—it’s a proving ground and a playoff gateway.
