Schauffele on the Chase in Scotland: Mental Fortitude to the Fore
The American star eyes a return to his winning ways at the Genesis Scottish Open, citing resilience and routine as his weapons of choice.
Las Vegas - World No. 3 Xander Schauffele admits he is in “full chase mode” as he looks to recapture his Major-winning form at this week’s Genesis Scottish Open, which tees off Thursday at The Renaissance Club, North Berwick. The 2022 champion of Scotland’s national open is determined to build on signs of promise as he prepares to defend his Open Championship crown at Royal Portrush later this month.
Still working his way back from an early-season rib injury, the Californian has shown flashes of brilliance, notably a top ten at Augusta and a T12 at Pinehurst. But after just one top ten all season, Schauffele knows he must sharpen both his game and his mindset.
“It’s definitely become a staple in my schedule,” Schauffele said. “It’s been a weird year coming off the highs of last year into injury and poor play. But I’ve reset my expectations and I’m just trying to behave as if I’m playing well — that mental fortitude has been the best part of my game.”
The Renaissance Club, hosting the 26th event of the DP World Tour’s Race to Dubai, will see a world-class field including Major champions Rory McIlroy, Scottie Scheffler, J.J. Spaun and Justin Thomas, as well as European Ryder Cup stars Viktor Hovland and Ludvig Åberg. Defending champion Robert MacIntyre, the home favourite, also headlines a Scottish contingent buoyed by Connor Syme, fresh off his breakthrough win at the KLM Open.
Schauffele, however, remains focused on himself and on steady progress.
“Any belief that I can win every tournament is separate from how I’m currently playing — that belief has to remain,” he added. “The results will follow if the mentality is right.”
For now, the “chase” continues, and all eyes will be on North Berwick to see if Schauffele’s resolve turns into the rhythm he has been seeking since spring.
