Royal St George’s to Host AIG Women’s Open for First Time in 2027
A landmark first awaits as one of golf’s most historic courses opens its doors to the world’s best women players
Porthcawl, Wales - The AIG Women’s Open will break new ground in 2027 when Royal St George’s stages the championship for the first time, from 28 July to 1 August.
The revered Kent venue, famed for its dunes, deep bunkers and long-standing connection with The Open, will finally welcome the leading players in the women’s game. It follows a long legacy of staging the men’s Championship, most recently in 2021 when Collin Morikawa triumphed.
Mark Darbon, Chief Executive of The R&A, called the decision “a commitment to giving the best players in the world the best stages on which to compete.” He added: “Royal St George’s is one of the world’s great links courses and will provide a fantastic test for the players.”
This marks another step in the journey to elevate the women’s game. The decision to bring the AIG Women’s Open to Sandwich highlights the shared vision of The R&A and title sponsor AIG to place the women’s championship at golf’s most iconic venues.
Peter Zaffino, Chairman and CEO of AIG, said: “Bringing the AIG Women’s Open to Royal St George’s reflects our continued shared commitment to elevate women’s golf. This course is a historic venue which will showcase the expertise of the world's best players and inspire spectators and supporters.”
Founded in 1887 by Laidlaw Purves, Royal St George’s has hosted The Open 15 times and played its part in the stories of champions like Harry Vardon, Walter Hagen, Bobby Locke, Greg Norman and Darren Clarke.
Before the championship heads to the south coast, the 2026 edition will be staged at Royal Lytham & St Annes from 29 July to 2 August, continuing the tradition of world-class links tests.
With Royal St George’s now added to the AIG Women’s Open rota, the future for the women’s game looks more prestigious than ever.
