Popert Sets Record, Sengul Leads Women’s Division at U.S. Adaptive Open
Las Vegas - Kipp Popert continued his remarkable form at the U.S. Adaptive Open on Tuesday, setting a new 36-hole scoring record and building a commanding lead heading into the final round at Woodmont Country Club in Rockville, Maryland.
Popert, 27, from England, followed his opening-round 61 with a six-under-par 66 on the South Course, finishing two rounds at 17-under-par 127. That total broke his own tournament record and left him 10 shots clear of Brendan Lawlor of Ireland and Lachlan Wood of Australia, who are tied for second at seven-under-par 137.
“I was really pleased with how I played today,” said Popert. “I maybe didn’t hit the ball as well as yesterday, but I putted really well today and will keep the same game plan for tomorrow.”
Popert, who has cerebral palsy, is seeking to become just the fourth male to win a USGA championship three years in a row. He has been playing through significant pain in his feet following a toe fusion surgery in January, managing his condition with additional treatment between rounds.
Former champion Simon Lee of the Republic of Korea sits fourth at six-under 138, with England’s Mike Browne in fifth at two-under 142. The cut for the men’s division fell at six over par, with 28 players advancing to the final round.
In the women’s division, Cassie Sengul of Virginia moved into the lead after carding a second-round 75. Her 36-hole total of 10-over-par 154 puts her three shots ahead of first-round leader and 2022 champion Kim Moore, who slipped back with an 83 on Tuesday. Sengul, 19, grew up less than 40 miles from Woodmont and is playing in front of friends and family this week.
“My driver has been great this week so I’m setting myself up perfectly,” Sengul said. “Just knowing how the greens are going to play out really helped me shoot the score I did today.”
Amanda Cunha is third at 160. Fourteen women advanced to Wednesday’s final round, which will be broadcast live on Golf Channel.
The final day promises an exciting finish in both divisions as players chase history and national titles at the U.S. Adaptive Open.
