PGA Tour Unveils Radical Competitive Overhaul for 2028 Structure
Two-tier model approved by boards introduces fierce promotion and relegation alongside high-stakes match play postseason
Paju, Korea - The PGA Tour Boards have approved a sweeping set of recommendations from the Future Competition Committee, establishing a radical new tournament model to be implemented in 2028. Aimed at heightening competitive consequence and ensuring the world’s top players face each other more consistently, the structural overhaul will divide the circuit into two concurrent tiers: the elite PGA Tour Championship Series and the promotional PGA Tour Challenger Series.
The primary tier, the PGA Tour Championship Series, will feature a condensed, high-stakes schedule running from February through August. Comprising approximately 23 to 24 events—including the major championships, The Players Championship, and signature postseason tournaments—the regular-season fields will be strictly capped at an average of 120 players with no alternate lists or sponsor exemptions. These events will maintain traditional 72-hole stroke play with a 36-hole cut for the top 65 and ties, but purses will balloon to a minimum of $20 million per tournament to ensure intense, meritocratic drama.
“From day one, the focus of the Future Competition Committee has been to build the best version of the PGA Tour,” stated PGA Tour Chief Executive Brian Rolapp following the announcement at TPC River Highlands during this week’s Travelers Championship. “The result is a new competitive model grounded in meritocracy, with clearer pathways, higher stakes and more consistency when the best players compete together. This model positions the PGA Tour for the future.”
Running concurrently, the PGA Tour Challenger Series will serve as a fierce battleground for emerging talent and relegated veterans fighting to reclaim status. The secondary tier will feature a minimum of 20 events played on historic venues with minimum purses of $4 million, capped by 144-player fields that include amateur exemptions. To maximise drama, seven Challenger events will be elevated during the primary series’ off-weeks, and any player who secures two immediate victories on the Challenger circuit will earn an automatic in-season promotion to the top tier.
This structural transformation also introduces dramatic modifications to the postseason and the autumn calendar. The season-ending Tour Championship will feature a fresh match-play format across a rotating roster of prestigious, unseen courses, whilst a separate “last chance” domestic series of four to six events will be established in the autumn to offer a final lifeline for relegated players. Reflecting on the monumental shift, Committee Chairman Tiger Woods noted, “This work was bigger than any one player or person—it was about designing the strongest possible version of the PGA Tour for the future generations of fans and players.”
