Nailing Down the Lead: Augusta's Amateurs in a Tightly Contested Battle
Augusta National Women’s Amateur

Evans, Georgia - In the serene stretches of Augusta National, a tale of grit and resilience unfolds as Kiara Romero and Lottie Woad find themselves locked in a spirited duel atop the leaderboard at the Augusta National Women’s Amateur. Both players are sitting pretty at nine-under 135 after the first 36 holes, setting the stage for a climactic showdown in Saturday’s final round.
Romero, a formidable force ranked fifth in the world among amateurs, embarked on her round with poise, netting a birdie early at the 10th. She navigated the front nine flawlessly, posting a bogey-free three-under 33. The round saw her soar to four-under after another birdie before a challenging sequence at Nos. 4 and 5 saw her card a double bogey and bogey, momentarily derailing her ascent. Undeterred, Romero demonstrated her championship mettle, rallying with three consecutive birdies to close her day and reclaim her spot at the summit.
Defending champion Woad, who entered the tournament as the top-ranked amateur, opened with a sizzling 65 but found the going a bit tougher in her second round, carding a two-under 70. At one juncture, she extended her lead to three strokes before a bogey on the par-3 eighth nudged her back to a tie with Romero.
Romero reflected on her performance with a maturity beyond her years. "The mental side of my game has really evolved," she shared. "Facing a double and a bogey and then finishing with three birdies—that shows how much I've grown since last year."
Woad, recalling last year's rollercoaster, noted, "I've been in this spot before, having led and then lost. Knowing I’ve bounced back from that gives me confidence."
The stage is set for a memorable finale at Augusta, with a total of 32 players making the cut to vie for the prestigious title. Among them are newcomers and seasoned campaigners alike, each aiming to etch their name into the storied annals of this tournament. As anticipation builds, the players will have a chance to fine-tune their strategies during Friday’s practice round, all gearing up for the ultimate test on Saturday. With NBC set to broadcast the final round live, fans are in for a thrilling conclusion to what has already been a remarkable display of golfing prowess at one of the sport's most revered venues.
