McIlroy ready to shine at Wentworth
Northern Irishman carries momentum into BMW PGA Championship after Irish Open triumph
Las Vegas - Rory McIlroy arrives at Wentworth Club this week brimming with confidence after securing his 20th DP World Tour title at the Amgen Irish Open. The four-time Major champion is chasing a second BMW PGA Championship crown, 11 years on from his victory in 2014.
The 36-year-old produced a rousing finish at the K Club last Sunday, eagling the last to force a play-off before edging Joakim Lagergren on the third extra hole. It was his fourth global win of the season and further evidence of his resurgent form. Now, with the Ryder Cup looming, McIlroy is determined to sharpen his game in Surrey.
“I feel like I'm playing two home events in a row,” McIlroy said. “Since the win here in 2014, I’ve had a lot of close calls. Last week was great, but I’m using this time to prepare for what’s coming.”
He will begin the week alongside Ryder Cup teammates Shane Lowry and Jon Rahm, both previous winners at Wentworth. Lowry lifted the title in 2022, while Rahm has never finished worse than fourth in four appearances. Defending champion Billy Horschel returns from hip surgery, joining Justin Rose and Tommy Fleetwood in another marquee group.
McIlroy, second on three occasions since his 2014 triumph, knows Wentworth demands patience as much as brilliance. With his game finely tuned and confidence soaring, he enters the week believing that another BMW PGA Championship win is well within reach.
