Island Duel: Tamburlini and Rhodes Reignite Rivalry in Tenerife
LET’s top two stars tee up side by side at Abama Golf with the Order of Merit – and history – in their sights
Paju, Korea - Chiara Tamburlini and Mimi Rhodes are set to renew one of the most compelling rivalries in women’s golf this week as the LET makes its long-awaited return to Tenerife for the Women’s Open at Abama Golf.
Rhodes, the current leader of the Order of Merit following a hat-trick of victories in her rookie season, will tee off alongside Tamburlini, last year’s standout who claimed the 2024 title with three wins of her own. From college duels—Rhodes at Wake Forest, Tamburlini at Ole Miss—to professional prominence, the pair’s journeys remain intertwined.
“Chiara’s year last year was really strong,” said Rhodes. “She’s always been a rival since college. Her success pushed me to believe I could do the same – I want to make history this year.”
The Englishwoman has wasted no time in establishing herself, lifting trophies in Australia, South Africa and the Netherlands. But she’ll face a resurgent Tamburlini this week, fresh from a career-best T14 finish at the U.S. Women’s Open and runner-up spot in Korea.
“I’m very excited to play with her again,” said the 25-year-old Swiss star. “She’s clearly playing well and it’s motivating to compete with someone who’s confident and performing. I think you can feed off that.”
Tamburlini is also embracing the challenge of returning to form in Europe. Her impressive run at major venues has brought a timely boost in belief.
“It was such a cool week in Wisconsin,” she said. “It really showed I belong at that level.”
The pair will have no room for complacency, however, as they are joined in the marquee group by Order of Merit No.2 Cara Gainer, with all three teeing off at 10:20am local time on Thursday.
For Rhodes, the Canary Islands offer familiar ground. Raised in Andalucia, she’s more than comfortable in the terrain.
“This feels like home,” she said. “Tight tee shots, lots of elevation – I’ll have to plot my way round. It’ll be interesting.”
With confidence high, history within reach, and rivalry renewed, all eyes turn to Tenerife, where Europe’s brightest are ready to shine.
