Hassall and General Abdulla to Assume APGC Reins
New leadership signals fresh era for Asia-Pacific golf
Las Vegas - Philip Hassall of New Zealand and General Abdulla Al Hashmi of the United Arab Emirates will become the new Chairman and Vice-Chairman of the Asia-Pacific Golf Confederation at October’s annual general meeting in Dubai.
Taimur Hassan Amin, who has led the Confederation since 2019, confirmed the appointments and expressed confidence in the incoming leadership, saying the pair would guide the APGC “with wisdom and vision” as the region continues its rise on the global stage.
“I’m excited at what the future holds for golf across the Asia-Pacific region – and for the APGC,” said Hassall, a Director for 15 years and currently Vice Chairman and Treasurer. “The potential for the game to continue growing is tremendous with the APGC at the forefront.”
Hassall will become the fifth Chairman of the Confederation, following Malaysian Tommy Lee, Australian David Cherry, Japan’s Kei Muratsu and Amin. He also served as Chairperson and President of Golf New Zealand, while recently retiring as Chief Executive of Hamilton Radiology and Midland MRI Ltd.
General Abdulla, a former UAE Air Force commander and Defence Attaché to Australia and New Zealand, now leads the Emirates Golf Federation and sits on the UAE National Olympic Committee. “I’m honoured to be appointed and look forward to further elevating the status of golf in the region and the APGC on the global stage,” he said.
