Gotterup ready to defend Genesis Scottish Open title after rapid rise
Defending champion arrives at The Renaissance Club ranked World No. 7 following a sensational 12-month surge on the global stage
Korea - American star Chris Gotterup returns to North Berwick this week in a vastly different position than a year ago, preparing to mount his title defence at the prestigious Genesis Scottish Open. Last year, Gotterup arrived at The Renaissance Club as an unheralded World No. 158 before holding off Rory McIlroy to secure a career-defining triumph. Twelve months later, the 25-year-old returns to Scotland ranked seventh in the Official World Golf Ranking, fresh off capturing his third PGA Tour title at last week’s John Deere Classic. Despite his meteoric rise, Gotterup insists his baseline approach remains unchanged as he prepares to tee it up in a blockbuster marquee group alongside World No. 2 McIlroy and home favorite Robert MacIntyre.
“I don’t think I’ve done much differently—I kept my head down and kept working hard on things that I knew,” Gotterup said ahead of the $9,000,000 Rolex Series event. “Winning last year on a completely different style of course showed me that I have a game that travels. Coming out on top against Rory and Scottie gave me a confidence boost, proving that I belonged. This field is one of the strongest we’ll play all year.” The tournament marks the fifth consecutive season that the historic event is co-sanctioned by the DP World Tour and PGA Tour under their ongoing Strategic Alliance.
The world-class field features several of the sport’s heavyweights, including Norway’s Viktor Hovland. Hovland arrives in Scotland seeking a second Rolex Series crown on the heels of a dramatic playoff victory over World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler at the Travelers Championship two weeks ago. After navigating a mentally taxing stretch of form over the past couple of seasons, the Norwegian noted that seeing structural improvements in practice has allowed him to show up to the golf course with a much more relaxed mindset.
Adding further depth to the star-studded line-up is reigning PGA Champion Aaron Rai, who is competing on British soil for the first time since claiming his maiden major title. Rai, the 2020 champion at The Renaissance Club, credited his past success in Scotland with opening the doors to his full-time career in the United States, which helped round him into a more experienced, complete golfer. Meanwhile, two-time major champion Jon Rahm expressed his profound appreciation for the rich heritage of European golf, noting that adding his name to the Scottish Open’s historic pedestal remains a primary career ambition. With an elite field assembled and significant Race to Dubai and FedExCup points on the line, the opening event of the Closing Swing promises to be a spectacular links showcase.
