Country Club of Charleston to Host 2028 U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship
Seoul, Korea – The United States Golf Association (USGA) has chosen the historic Country Club of Charleston in South Carolina as the venue for the 2028 U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship, slated for September 23-28. The nearby Yeamans Hall Club in Hanahan will also play a crucial role as the stroke-play co-host for this prestigious event.
Bill McCarthy, director of the U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship for the USGA, expressed enthusiasm about the return to Charleston. "We are delighted to bring the championship back to the Country Club of Charleston, a venue known for its steadfast support and promotion of amateur golf," McCarthy said. He highlighted the championship's significance in providing a platform for mid-amateur players to showcase their skills and vie for the coveted Robert T. Jones Memorial Trophy.
The Country Club of Charleston is no stranger to hosting high-caliber golf events, having been the site of the 2013 U.S. Women’s Amateur and the 2019 U.S. Women’s Open, among other notable tournaments. Justin Boulware, president of the Country Club of Charleston, remarked on the club’s honor in hosting another significant championship. "It is with great pleasure that we welcome the USGA and an exceptional field of mid-amateur competitors to our Seth Raynor-designed courses," Boulware stated.
The club, which opened in 1925 and underwent important revisions after Hurricane Hugo in 1990-1991 and again in 2007, boasts a rich history of golfing excellence. Notable events hosted include the Carolinas Amateur, the South Carolina Amateurs, and the Azalea Invitational. Additionally, the club’s membership includes several celebrated golfers such as Henry Picard and Beth Daniel, both of whom have left indelible marks on the sport.
Yeamans Hall Club, another Raynor design, complements this championship with its unique character and historic charm, having hosted the 1997 U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur. Together, these clubs represent the finest of South Carolina’s golf heritage and will provide a challenging and picturesque backdrop for the 2028 U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship. This event promises to be a significant addition to South Carolina's rich legacy of hosting USGA championships.
