Big-hitting DeChambeau and Smooth-rolling Smith Set for LIV Golf Showdown
Golf’s ultimate power versus precision battle awaits thrilling finale in Mexico City
Seoul, Korea - In a showdown that promises to be one for the ages, LIV Golf’s two premier talents, Bryson DeChambeau and Cameron Smith, will duel head-to-head in Sunday's final round at Club de Golf Chapultepec. DeChambeau, the Crushers GC Captain known for his colossal drives, holds a slender one-shot advantage over Smith, the Ripper GC Captain renowned for his silky-smooth putting stroke.
The stage is beautifully set after Saturday’s electrifying second round, where both stars carded matching rounds of 5-under 66 while playing side by side. DeChambeau (13 under) capped his impressive display with a vital birdie at the par-3 18th, edging him ahead of Smith (12 under) and setting the scene for a mouth-watering climax.
Adding even more intrigue, Torque GC Captain Joaquin Niemann, who shares the day's best score of 7-under 64, joins them three shots back. Niemann, the current season points leader, is more than capable of spoiling the party.
“It’s scary when he gets on the greens,” DeChambeau marvelled about Smith. “Whenever he gets on the greens, I’m like, well, that’s a one-putt. It’s pretty awesome.”
Smith returned the compliment, admitting with a laugh: “I wish I could drive the ball like him. I often wonder how much better I would be if I could.”
Both are desperate to end their winless droughts; DeChambeau hasn’t tasted victory in 19 starts, while Smith is seeking his first triumph in 20 outings. Yet, team success has kept their confidence buoyant—Crushers and Rippers have each clinched multiple regular-season trophies and major team honours.
“Playing in the final group tomorrow will be a lot of fun. We’re going to go after it,” DeChambeau said enthusiastically, well aware of what’s at stake.
Smith, whose calm demeanour disguises an intense competitive spirit, is equally hungry: “Being in contention today and tomorrow is so much fun. It’s been a while for me at the top, so I’m really enjoying it.”
Niemann, meanwhile, aims to add to his four LIV Golf wins. A victory here would strengthen his grip on the coveted U.S. Open exemption spot next month, though he knows overcoming the elite pairing ahead of him will be no small feat.
“The way Bryson and Cam are playing, it’s going to be a lot of fun,” Niemann predicted. “It’s going to be special.”
Indeed, golf fans in Mexico City—and around the globe—can anticipate fireworks as power meets precision in a LIV Golf classic.
