Armitage goes low to lead FedEx Open de France
Englishman fires blistering 64 to seize two-shot advantage in Paris
Las Vegas - Marcus Armitage stormed into a two-stroke lead at the FedEx Open de France with a seven under par 64 at Golf de Saint-Nom-La-Bretèche.
The Englishman produced eight birdies in ten holes, including six in succession from the eighth to the 13th, to outpace Australia’s Min Woo Lee and Frenchman Julien Guerrier on five under.
“I was hitting it pretty close and just the putts started to drop,” Armitage said. “Once you see a few go in, you get on a run, and then you just feel like you’re moving the putter and picking it out of the hole.”
Guerrier holed a clutch bunker shot for par on the 18th to stay in touch, while compatriot Ugo Coussaud joined a group on four under that included Maximilian Kieffer, Marcus Kinhult, Jens Dantorp, Keita Nakajima, Jorge Campillo and Sam Bairstow.
Spain’s Pablo Ereno provided the highlight of the day with a hole in one at the 153-yard seventh, one of 13 eagles recorded as part of the tournament’s Eagles for Good initiative, which will see 13 trees planted in collaboration with FedEx and the Arbor Day Foundation.
