A Win Beyond the Scorecard
Father and son share something deeper than records at the PNC Championship
Matt Kuchar and his 18-year-old son Cameron produced a performance for the ages at the PNC Championship, winning by a record seven strokes at Ritz-Carlton Golf Club and finishing at an unprecedented 33-under-par.
The victory came on their fourth attempt together and carried added meaning for Kuchar, who first played the event with his father Peter in 2018. Peter Kuchar passed away earlier this year, and memories of those early days returned as Matt and Cameron closed out a flawless week.
“This is something we’ve had our sights on for many years,” Kuchar said, recalling moments when Cameron caddied for his grandfather. “Dad is smiling from above… this Sunday, I don’t know that it could have gone any better.”
Cameron matched his father shot for shot in a final round defined by freedom and confidence. “Every now and then, I would let him know, all right, I made that one myself,” Cameron said, smiling at the back-and-forth that summed up their partnership.
Their 36-hole total of 111 eclipsed tournament records, while the seven-shot margin of victory underlined a week that felt, to Kuchar, guided by something greater. “There’s something magical that does exist,” he said, fighting back tears. “Just miss Pops.”
Behind them, Team Love, featuring Davis Love III and son Dru, shared second place alongside Team Daly after a final-round 58, but this championship belonged unmistakably to a father and son who found more than silverware at the finish.
