8th Women’s Amateur Asia-Pacific Championship Heads to New Zealand
Royal Wellington Golf Club to host prestigious event for the first time.
Quangnam, Vietnam - The Women’s Amateur Asia-Pacific Championship (WAAP), the premier women’s amateur golf tournament in the region, will be held in New Zealand for the first time next year.
At a press conference held at Hoiana Shores Golf Club at 11 am on the 6th, the R&A and Asia-Pacific Golf Confederation (APGC) confirmed that the 8th WAAP will take place at Royal Wellington Golf Club from 12 to 15 February.
Since its inception in 2018, WAAP has visited Singapore and Thailand twice, as well as the United Arab Emirates, Japan, and Vietnam. However, the event has yet to be held in Korea.
Royal Wellington, the championship venue, is one of New Zealand’s most prestigious courses, located along the Hutt River. It has hosted the New Zealand Open seven times and was the site of the 2017 Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship (AAC), the leading amateur event for men in the region.
Mark Davon, CEO of the R&A, said: “This will be our first WAAP event in New Zealand. The competitors will battle for the chance to play in major golf tournaments. Royal Wellington Golf Club is an excellent course to test their skills and showcase their talents.”
APGC Chairman Taimur Hasan Amin added: “We are delighted to bring WAAP to New Zealand. It will be a memorable competition.”
Jeff Latchdo, CEO of Golf New Zealand, welcomed the event, stating: “We are thrilled to host WAAP, the best women’s amateur tournament in the Asia-Pacific region.”
The winner will earn a place in three of the five women’s major championships –the AIG Women’s Open, Chevron Championship, and Amundi Evian Championship. She will also receive invitations to the Augusta National Women’s Amateur (ANWA) and the KLPGA Tour’s Hana Financial Group Championship.
